What Is Shaolin Kung Fu? | Shaolin Kung Fu

Hi, I’m Sifu Romaine, here to talk to you
about Shaolin Kung Fu. There is a legend that dates back to 527 AD
about an Indian monk who travels from India to China. When he gets to China, he finds the monks
are weak, and he’s there to teach his version of Chan Buddhism. While they’re falling asleep, he gets frustrated. He decides to go into a cave, for a period
of about nine years. When he comes out, he comes out with some
special training exercises. One of those exercises was the 18 bone Marrow
Washing Qigong. Those exercises helped to restore the monks
to better health. Those monks eventually transferred those exercises,
or took ideas from those exercises, and that became the first organized system of Kung
Fu. We call that Shaolin. In order for students to graduate from the
Shaolin temple, there is a period of tests that they had to take. There was an oral and written examination. There was contests among their peers, and
of course, the famous hallway of 108 dummies. As they walked through the hallway, different
perils were triggered, different dummies, and they would be attacked. If they survived, they would get to the end
of the hallway, where there was an urn that they had to move. They had to move it with their forearms. When they did that, they were branded with
the tiger on one side and the dragon on the other. The door would open, and that would serve
as their diploma as a graduation from Shaolin. I’m Sifu Romaine, and this is a little bit
about Shaolin Kung Fu.

  1. So did he get all this information from TV, because I remember watching this in the 70s. This also runs counter with Indian buddhist were completely pacifists

  3. yeah i hope so to althoo i felt a lil dissapointed when it was just a story telling lession i wannted to see some action but hey learning true origins was also cool

  4. Shaolin temple is a source of Chinese Martial Arts (Chinese Kung Fu)
PS: Kung Fu is an organized system including thousands of forms of Martial Arts
real kung fu fighters have to know various forms and styles of Kung Fu
like Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Vincent Zhao, Jet Li, etc.

  5. @ TheSAEkid kung fu was also taught to them as a form of excercise and strength building after so much meditation and fasting

  6. i hate it when people pronounce Kung Fu as in the 'Kung' is pronounced like the word 'lung'. Like WTF. its pronounced " Koong Foo", and that is how the chinese pronounce it.

  7. According to the Jingde of the Lamp, after Bodhidharma, a Buddhist monk from South India,[8] left the court of the Liang emperor Wu in 527, he eventually found himself at the Shaolin Monastery, where he “faced a wall for nine years, not speaking for the entire time”.

  8. According to the Yì Jīn Jīng, after Bodhidharma faced the wall for nine years at Shaolin temple and made a hole with his stare, he left behind an iron chest. When the monks opened this chest they found two books: the “Marrow Cleansing Classic,” and the “Muscle Tendon Change Classic”, or "Yi Jin Jing" within. The first book was taken by Bodhidharma's disciple Huike, and disappeared;

  9. as for the second, the monks selfishly coveted it, practicing the skills therein, falling into heterodox ways, and losing the correct purpose of cultivating the Real. The Shaolin monks have made some fame for themselves through their fighting skill; this is all due to their possession of this manuscript.

  10. Which means, Bodhidharma didn't invent Shaolin kong fu, and Shaolin kong fu never arrived in India. But the book Yi jing jing (I don't know why it's Chinese not Indian.. because Bodhidharma stayed too long in China so he wrote the book in Chinese?) inspired Shaolin monks to create Shaolin kong fu. We all know where Buddhism started, but it has been changed and developed in many different areas. So you can't say everything related to Buddhism was from India. This is my opinion.

  11. If it's ture, it's still just Shaolin Kung fu… And now you are saying all kinds of Kung fu…. Buddhism Kung fu is one kind of Kung fu, and Shaolin Kung fu is just one kind of Buddhism Kung fu… Chinese Buddhism was been developed and unlike Indian anymore… Shaolin Kung fu contains Zen too… Zen is totally originated in China during the 6th century CE. I have done the research, Bodhidharma wrote the Yi jing jing, but Yi jing jing is not a book of Kung fu….

  12. PLEASE do your research and watch a video of Yi jing jing… It's very slow, like YOGA! And it's only 13mins!!! OMG…

  13. Search Yi jing jing on youtube… that is what the Indian monk invented! It's very slow, more like yoga, and somehow it's also like Tai Chi.. It's one kind of Chi Kung!!! We all know where Yoga came from, right? A+B, now make sense! But Shaolin Kung Fu's feature are fast, powerful and using long wooden sticks! Shaolin Kung Fu have one very important thing is Zen! If you studied hard… you know where Zen originated, right? Bodhidharma didn't invent Shaolin kong fu… Do your research please…

  14. IF you never heard of it, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. It just means you are ignorant and maybe have too much "Chinese pride".
