Tai Chi Martial Art Applications : Tai Chi: Fan Through Back Attack


In this sequence we’re going to be showing
a possible application using the movement of fan through back in the Tai Chi form against
somebody just coming up and wanting to box with you. So, when we do fan through back
is we step out, open the arms, the left arm coming out, right arm coming back, opening
ourselves up. So, if somebody is up here, they want to box you. Come through with the
elbow energy at the end possible. So, the slow of this is Ray is coming at me with this
punch is I do my fan through back and cut the root down, cut the tree off at the root,
if I try and worry too much about this I’m in trouble already. But, if I come here and
break the root this whole arm will become useless and if you look even though we have
same length arms, if I’m in this movement, in this good bow stance my arm is going to
connect with him before his arm connects with me. So, as we come forward, as I come strike
the root and then I have my elbow energy so I can just follow through striking with my
elbow stepping behind. Right? So, this is one of the possible applications. Another
application is he comes here, he steps through, I strike and then I can turn around and chop
at that direction as well.

  1. I like this technique, we have similar moves in kusanku and other kata. I tend to teach my students to respond this way to a hooking punch, for a straight punch such as this one I prefer to go to the outside.

  2. I agree with acupuncter and SelfDefenceExpert. You would not want to cut his punch off at the pectoral like that, especially if he has longer reach.
    Not immediately defending the punch is begging to get struck.
    Fan through back is usually an outside parry and palm strike simultaneously.

  3. well all you need to do is step then step your right foot behind their right foot when you strike with the elbow.. and they should fall over.

Its like Aikido now, people say it doesnt work, i say to those people go watch UFC then since its obvious you've come to that conclusion because some Aikido fighter has got into the octagon and lost. So you judge that one fight and say Aikido does not work, Aikido is a martail art, self defence. Not full contact fights retards.

    It MAY work against non-trained person…. but not against amateur boxer.

    It's more to easy just to lean back or side, but it's not so cool – no "chinese" motions at all….

  7. Better methods against fast punchers are to weigh their attack and lead them to over extend a bit from there hard push into their center, Chen does very different responses to fast punches.
    Rule one , dont be a fixed target

  8. i think it could work. the defender just needs to get in the pocket more and I would say swat the attackers right arm away with the back of your left arm, then follow through with the elbow right away. either to the solar plexus or to the head. your elbow will protect you from a left hook

  9. this is bullshido. fan has no practical application except to keep you cool. No historic martial usage neither, just looks pretty that's all. Not a weapon. This is just made up with no trial. Don't know how this can be seen as an "expert"

  10. @Shantou1 Really? Buddy, it's not an ACTUAL fan. "Fan Through Back" is the name of the move. Just like in the move "Needle at Sea Bottom", there is not ACTUALLY needles and a sea involved.

    hes pressing the shoulder socket, shortening the punch while turning his body, lengthening the distance of his head from the fist. the movement also changes the orientation of the punch to the outside. Regardless, the punch is greatly weakened without the shoulder.

  12. @sickofdao: Greatly weakened and struck is still being struck, and I personally don't think this application addresses the imminent threat, which is the fist at your face. I've used the parry and hit Fan Through Back application I know and would trust it much more than this.

  13. @WarriorBoy I remember from doing Wing Chun one of the profound lessons I learnt is that is doesn't matter if you get hit a little in a non vital area. I'll deflect a strike from my face / neck and take it softer on my shoulder and not bat an eyelid.

  14. @evilpilch: I'm not disagreeing with you but that's not quite the point of what I was saying. This version of this technique doesn't address the punch in the most complete manner it could and leaves too many possibilities to be struck.

Agreed, possibly simply make contact and then slide from forearm to the shoulder, impact at shoulder would be approximately the same, I know its not the true energy of fan through the back… or taiji really, would be more bagua-esque, but functional. Unless the opponent is better than the practitioner at sticking… in which case, they're probably just better than the practitioner. 🙂

  16. All Tai Chi striking is ripping grab the guy's arm and strike them like that they can't move back yet they take the full impact of the hit fan through back can be used as a throw also

It's important to take the balance from them it's make someone freeze that's why it's important to grab the arm and get them to start to fall towards you then strike that way the full weight of their body is going into your palm and this way they kind of spin out on the floor and then you can do the the secret move of stomp face with heel which is one of Tai Chi's most effective and simple techniques let them hurt them self follow them to you can put them on the ground and then you can knock him out Tai Chi Done Right is as mean as it gets
