Shorin-Ryu Karate Tips & Techniques : Rear Grab in Shorin-Ryu Karate

How are you doing? My name is Qaeem, on behalf
of Expert Village. I’ll be demonstrating Shorin-Ryu karate. In this segment, we’re
going to be demonstrating when someone has grabbed you from behind. I’m going to bring
in my target Mohammed. Mohammed is going to be grabbing me from behind and I’m going
to show you the proper way that you want to get out of this technique so that you will
not injure yourself, but you also will be able to defend yourself. Mohammed is going
to grab me from behind. Now this is a typical grab. Someone is going to grab you if they’re
trying to control you or they’re trying to take you back. When anyone grabs around
you neck you always want to turn your neck sideways so that you can open up the air between
his arm and your throat. You want to the turn sideways, look over, you want to grab his
arm, and what I am going to do, I’m going to step behind and come up. Now, when you
step behind, you want to make sure that you get directly behind them so that you can perform
other moves on him. Mohammed is going to grab again. Once again, I turn my head, grab right
here behind the arm, twist. Now, what you are going to do is, you’re going to bring
his arm behind his back so therefore you have to push his arm up. You can easily injure
his arm like this or you can control him better with his arm behind his back like that. Mohammed
is going to grab again. I’m gong to turn, open up the windpipe, grab his arm, come behind,
and twist and I am out of the ground. Now we’re going to put it all in one motion.
Mohammed is going to grab, turn, and get out of it. Once again, turn, get out of it, and
that is the grab from behind break technique. My name is Qaeem, on behalf of Expert Village.
Thank you for watching.

  1. While you may not think so now, Kata will be key in your development in martial arts. I studied Matsubayashi Ryu. Just look up the first two basic Kata (Fukyu kataI/II), and hopefully you will be impressed. Or search for Tai Chi (Chin na) specifically if you're looking for arrest techniques. Best videos by Dr. Yang Jwing Ming. Best of Luck!

  2. You could not step on the foot of a knowledgeable fighter. They turn their body by positioning one foot further forward to protect the groin, too.

  3. He is 100% correct on doing that as the arm cannot put pressure on the throat or arteries/veins when the head is turned into the elbow joint. The other tidbit he left out is to lower the chin immediately.

  4. It is never guaranteed that the assailant is an experienced fighter in which case what I have written will work just fine if they are not. However, if the assailant is a trained/knowledgeable fighter, then you will not just simply find yourself in a rear choke and will have to deal with the certain subsequent issues to follow the initial grab.
