Mary Kom recently won her career’s 6th Gold Medal in the 10th Women World Boxing Championship and hence, got qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Mary Kom has seen many ups and downs in her Boxing Career. She has claimed many awards. This is her 6th Gold Medal. In this video we will know some interesting facts about the life of Mary Kom. Mary Kom was born on 1st March 1983 in Manipur’s Kangathei Village. Her real name is Mangte Chungneijang. Due to poor financial conditions she used to help her parents in farming. Since her childhood, Mary Kom was especially interested in Sports. Since her school time, she was interested in Football, Volleyball and Athletics. Her boxing career started in 2000 when, Dingko Singh inspired her to switch from athletics to boxing. When she was 15, she left her village to join the Imphal’s Sports Academy. And started her training under Imphal’s State Boxing Couch M Narjit Singh. Mary Kom won her first award that of The Best Boxer in Manipur’s Women Boxing Championship in 2000. After which for the next 5 years i.e. from 2000 to 2005, she won the National Championship. She won a Gold in the 2009 Asian Indoor Games Vietnam and then won a bronze in the 2010 Asian Games Later, she went on to win another Gold in the 2014 Asian Games, Incheon. She also claimed the Gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. In her career, along with success, Mary Kom has also experienced failures and hardships. Her father was strictly against her training. But, she continued her training secretly. Though Mary Kom won the Bronze in 2012 Summer Olympics she could not qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympics. Mary Kom has won the Women’s Amateur Boxing Championship 6 times. Mary Kom has also been awarded with the Country’s Top Civilian Awards; the Padmashree, Padma Vibhushan and the Arjuna Award. In 2008, Mary Kom was awarded with the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award. BSNL had appointed Mary Kom as their Brand Ambassador for 2 continuous years. The Ministry of Tribal Affairs, for it’s Tribes India Initiative, had also appointed Mary Kom as an Ambassador. Moving forward in her career, she won many such competitions and made India proud.
