Filipino Martial Arts Dekiti Tirsia Siradas Kali (with Lakan Guro Nowee Cecilliano)

This is Dekiti Tirsia Siradas Kali Or Kali for short It is an ancient Filipino combat and survival system indigenous to the island in Negros in the Visayan region Its emphasis is on the usage of impact and bladed weapons As well as empty hand techniques and firearms Its name was derived from the Ilonggo dialect ‘Dekit’ means near or very close ‘Tirsia’ means to push the enemy And ‘Siradas’ means stopping ‘Kali’, however, refers to arnis A piece of wooden stick indigenous to the Philippines This is close-combat martial arts system using kali or even other weapons such as a knife The arnis is the primary weapon used in Dekiti Kali Because the founders of this martial arts were sugarcane farmers back in the commonwealth period And now it has become an official form of martial arts offered to civilians who wants to learn this discipline Actually, this was just an accident that I found this group and Guro Nowee in general I was just jogging in UP and I saw people are playing with sticks And another round, I saw them playing with knives So, being a curious person that I am I walked up to them and asked them, “What kind of martial arts is that?” And then he said, “Kali.’ He offered me to try it out And then, I did Actually, surprisingly, it’s not even that hard You see what the ‘Guro’ is doing and you repeat it as many times as you need to Unitl you completely absorb the movement It also depends on how much you want to practice I try to practice everyday They are just two of the members who regularly train in UP Diliman What separates Dekiti Kali from other Kali systems in martial arts Is that it is not limited to just one tool It covers almost everything that people use in their daily lives What we teach here in Kali Is that it’s not just a stick, it’s a sword It can also be a machete You can use this with anything We also use knives Usually, schools and other commercial martial arts schools only teach with an arnis Here we teach the proper knife-fighting technique At the same time, we teach them how to have the proper discipline When using the knowledge they gained from this martial arts technique According to Lakan Guro Nowee Cecilliano Dekiti Kali can be fatal A strike can cause severe damage to opponents Everyone can learn the Kali system It doesn’t matter if you’re a boy or a girl Anyone! This doesn’t discriminate age Learning the basics of the Kali does not only help us defend ourselves in times if trouble But it also helps us know our identity as Filipinos Filipino martial arts is for Filipinos So, we just be proud of this And we shouldn’t only be proud of it It’s really beautiful Its practicality… It’s totally different from other [country’s martial arts system] Like I said, being half-Filipino and not being able to speak Tagalog fluently I get a lot of dirty looks But being able to incorporate Kali just makes me that much more Filipino Especially since not that many Filipinos are doing it Which is a shame because it’s part of our culture I am inviting everyone to learn the Dekiti system It’s a Filipino martial arts Philippines have a lot different kinds of martial arts But this system We guarantee that this is different from the other martial arts here in the Philippines As other people say, “Great things start from small beginnings.” We may say that Dekiti Kali is just setting the ground to be recognized as a martial arts But Dekiti Kali exhibits a big potential to be patronized by more Filipinos

  1. try it on a non-compliant and trained opponent
the truth lies in that examination
…. not in flow drills with feeders

  2. @chris fernandez maybe you should visit them and do some friendly sparring with knives to their Guru if you want.
